Teachers are famously sceptical of government thinking and see a wide gap between the job they do every day and the way it’s reported in the media – so creating a respected and effective set of magazines for this audience on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is no mean feat.
John Brown produces four such magazines: Primary Teachers and Secondary Teachers (bi-monthly), Early Years (quarterly) and Governors (three times a year).

Each has been proven to positively affect readers’ perception of the DSCF and the role it plays in their lives, while also providing compelling and useful content for teachers, nursery workers and governors.
- On average, survey respondents spend almost half an hour reading Teachers and 39 minutes with Early Years – much higher than the APA average of 24 minutes
|
- 87 per cent of respondents have taken action because of a feature or call to action within Teachers magazine and 83 per cent did the same with Early Years, compared with an APA average of 37 per cent and a B2B average of 41 per cent
- Satisfaction with the DCSF as a whole is significantly higher than the control samples

More than half of readers agree that it makes the DCSF seem good at providing inspiring ideas and content, with resources, features and national strategies featuring high in the list of most used and enjoyed sections. The strength of the magazines, therefore, is in providing an informative view of what is happening in schools and early years settings, and offering good ideas to help improve education for children.
